Every time you pick up a new helmet, you surely make sure it fits your head perfectly, sits snugly, looks great, and feels comfortable. But how can you be sure that the model you have chosen can provide you with the desired level of protection in case of an accident? Which aspects of the helmet construction and materials indicate that the gear will perform as expected? Our technical consultant and resident writer Michael Grayen tries to answer these questions in his article on the matter.
The majority of modern helmets have three main layers of protection: inner liner, middle Styrofoam layer, and hard outer shell. Since soft inner liner and padding are there mostly for comfort, and foam layer plays the role of a buffer, we will be focusing our attention mostly on outer shells. It is not only the most prominent part of a helmet but arguably the most important one.
